Title       : Testing the isotropic cosmos

Abstract:

Statistical isotropy implied by the cosmological principle is a fundamental assumption of cosmology. Measured violations would have far reaching ramifications for cosmology. The increasingly exquisite measurements of CMB anisotropy and polarization provide a promising observational testbed for this assumption. I will describe the bipolar spherical harmonic (BipoSH) representation proposed and developed at IUCAA that has been gaining acceptance as the method of choice for quantifying statistical isotropy violation in the CMB. I provide a status report on this new research frontier and indicate the challenges that lie ahead in ensuring subtle systematic effects do not affect the conclusions drawn from upcoming data from Planck.
