Radio Astronomy School

NCRA-TIFR organizes an advanced Radio Astronomy School (RAS) every alternate year, typically in August/September. The main objective of this school is to provide the upcoming generation of astronomers exposure to the techniques and excitement of radio astronomy, especially in the context of the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). The RAS consists of lectures on radio interferometry theory and techniques, with an emphasis on their application at low radio frequencies. It includes hands-on tutorials demonstrating the analysis of GMRT data using standard software packages.

The school is aimed at doctoral students, post-doctoral researchers and faculty members in astronomy or related subjects. Applications from Master's level students with sufficient background in radio astronomy will usually also be considered. Preference will be given to those who are either already using or have a keen interest in using, the GMRT for their research. Candidates from outside India may also apply; if selected, their participation in the RAS would be subject to their obtaining an Indian visa and any necessary clearances from the appropriate government authorities.

The typical deadline for applications is in mid-July. The application should include a curriculum vitae and a detailed statement explaining why the applicant
would like to attend the RAS. Financial assistance for local expenses and travel within India may be given to selected participants if they are unable to obtain support from their parent institution. Accommodation for the period of the RAS will be provided to all participants.
