JEST 2013

(For a Research Scholarship to do a Ph.D. in Astronomy and Astrophysics)

The National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA) of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research is a leading centre of research in a wide range of areas in astronomy and astrophysics. NCRA is located on the Pune University Campus, adjacent to the campus of the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics. NCRA and IUCAA have a joint graduate school. NCRA offers exciting opportunities for research in astronomy and astrophysics, and related instrumentation, with an emphasis on radio astronomy. NCRA has built, and operates, the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT), which is located near Pune and is the biggest and most powerful telescope in the world at low radio frequencies. The GMRT has already made several significant astronomical discoveries, and has a large fraction of international users. NCRA has modern computing facilities and a well-stocked library.

Eligibility criteria for admission to NCRA's Ph.D. programme:

Applications are invited from students who expect to complete their M.Sc. or B.E/B.Tech/M.E/M.Tech. degrees by August 2013. Students in any branch of the B.E, B.Tech, M.E. or M.Tech. degrees, or in the Physics, Electronics, Astronomy or Applied Mathematics branches of the B.Sc. or M.Sc. degrees, are eligible for selection to NCRA's 2013 Ph.D. program. Students who have already completed any of the above degrees are also eligible. Students in the final year of the B.Sc. or the first year of the M.Sc. degrees (in the above branches) may also apply for selection to NCRA's Integrated Ph.D. programme. Such students would attend one year of additional Master's-level courses before joining the IUCAA-NCRA graduate school. We are looking for highly motivated students with a consistently good academic record. Students who have already completed the above degrees can also apply. The selection to a research scholarship at NCRA is through JEST-2013 and two interviews. The JEST-2013 selection is in addition to the selection through the IUCAA-NCRA Admission Test (INAT).

How to apply:

Candidates can apply for JEST-2012 ONLINE at the website http://www.jest.org.in

Details regarding the test are given at the above website. Based on their performance in the JEST-2013 written test, a limited number of candidates will be invited for interviews at NCRA in June 2013. The final selection will be based on a combination of the scores in the JEST-2013 test and the interviews. Candidates selected by NCRA are expected to join in August 2013, after satisfactory completion of their qualifying examination.
