Biography:

Sunil completed his B.Sc. (Honours) in 2013 and M.Sc. in Physics in 2015 from the University of Delhi. He pursued his doctoral research on galactic magnetic fields in the Department of Physics and Astrophysics at Delhi University with Prof. T. R. Seshadri and obtained his PhD in 2021. Following his Ph.D., he briefly worked as a research associate at IIT Bombay before moving to the University of Potsdam and DESY, Germany, as a post-Doctoral fellow from 2021 to 2024. In September 2024, he joined NCRA-TIFR as a Post-Doctoral Fellow.

Research description:

Magnetic fields permeate the interstellar medium, galaxies, and even galaxy clusters, spanning scales from pc to kpc and beyond. These fields are typically composed of both mean and turbulent components, which dominate at different scales. They govern star formation, influence the dynamics and stability of the interstellar medium, instigate galactic winds, and play a key role in cosmic ray acceleration and scattering processes, which remain only partially understood. Sunil's research primarily focuses on investigating large-scale and turbulent magnetic fields in galaxies, galaxy clusters, supernova remnants, and pulsar wind nebulae using radio observations, in combination with observations from other wavebands. Additionally, he has been involved in theoretical studies exploring the effects of magnetic fields on the thermal and ionization history of the Universe and the emission processes in fast radio bursts.
