Biography:

Balpreet Kaur obtained a B.Sc. (Hons.) in Physics from Hindu College, University of Delhi, in 2016, and an M.Sc. in Physics from the Department of Physics and Astrophysics, University of Delhi, in 2018. She joined the Ph.D. programme of NCRA-TIFR in July 2018. She is now working with Nissim Kanekar on understanding neutral gas in high redshift galaxies.

Research description:

My Ph.D. research broadly focuses on understanding neutral gas in different kinds of galaxies. Specifically, I am interested in the following areas:
Galaxy evolution
I have been using CO and HI 21cm spectroscopy to probe physical conditions and the evolution of gas in high-redshift galaxies. These studies include (1) measurements of the molecular gas mass of high-z absorption-selected galaxies, (2) studies of the molecular gas excitation in high-z galaxies, (3) measurements of the neutral atomic hydrogen mass of high-z star-forming galaxies, (4) "Blind" HI 21cm absorption surveys at z~1, etc.
The host galaxies of Fast Radio Bursts
I have been using HI 21cm emission mapping of the host galaxies of fast radio bursts, to probe the physical conditions in the host galaxies that give rise to these enigmatic transients. We have carried out the first HI 21cm mapping of an FRB host galaxy, finding evidence that the FRB host has undergone a recent minor merger event, that is likely to have triggered the formation of the progenitor star of the FRB.
