Pulsar and Transients with the uGMRT

Post Doctoral Fellowships

The upgraded GMRT (uGMRT) with its wide frequency coverage from 130 to 1500 MHz, coupled with a maximum instantaneous bandwidth of 400 MHz, offers unique opportunities for exciting work in the broad areas of pulsars and fast transients. There are plans for carrying out precision pulsar timing work with the uGMRT, using the 400 MHz wide receiver systems at L-band, in combination with one or more of the lower frequency bands to provide additional information on dispersion measure variations, and pilot observations for these have begun. The high sensitivity of the wideband uGMRT systems can also be used for a variety of other interesting pulsar science, such as pulsar searches and studies of emission properties. A fully real-time coherent dedispersion system for the maximum bandwidth of 400 MHz is being implemented to facilitate such observations. The pipeline for detection of fast transients using the multi-beaming capabilities of the GMRT is also under development. It has been tested for the existing 32 MHz legacy GMRT system and is being extended to the wideband uGMRT system. There is significant scope for work on the development of specialized pipelines for the above applications, as well as for utilizing them for new areas of exploration.

The post-doctoral fellow selected for this position will work with Prof. Yashwant Gupta on the technical and/or science aspects of the programs described above. About 75% of the candidate's time is expected to be devoted to these activities, and the balance can be used for other science activities. The candidate should possess a Ph.D. in astrophysics or a related area. Prior experience in the areas of pulsars and/or transients, as well as some exposure to experimental techniques in radio astronomy, are desirable.

Research activities at NCRA-TIFR are centered on low-frequency radio astronomy, with faculty members pursuing research in diverse areas of astrophysics (see http://www.ncra.tifr.res.in). NCRA-TIFR operates two large observational facilities, the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope and the Ooty Radio Telescope. The monthly salary of Post-Doctoral Fellows at NCRA-TIFR depend on experience after the doctoral degree. The monthly salary of candidates who join after submitting their doctoral thesis, but without receiving their doctoral degree, is INR 32,000. For candidates who have received their doctoral degrees, the monthly salary ranges from INR 36,000 to INR 40,000. Post-doctoral fellows are also entitled to a contingency grant of INR 32,000 per year. All positions are tenable for a maximum of 3 years, with continuations subject to a yearly review.

Post-doctoral Fellows at NCRA-TIFR are provided a travel grant of INR 2,00,000 over the course of the fellowship to enable them to travel for international conferences or for research collaborations. They are also entitled to the on-campus housing (subject to availability), or a house rent allowance, and medical coverage under NCRA-TIFR's medical scheme.
