Main Research Areas: Coherent radio emission from hot magnetic stars

Supervisor: Poonam Chandra

Biography:
Barnali completed her B.Sc. in Physics from Hansraj College, New Delhi, in 2014, and then her M.Sc. in Physics from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, in 2016. She joined NCRA-TIFR for her doctoral studies in 2016 and completed the Graduate School courses and research projects in 2018. She is now working with Poonam Chandra for her doctoral research.

Research Description:
Radio emissions from hot stars are usually generated by thermal free-free emission. However, a subset of these hot stars are found to possess strong, ordered magnetic fields, and, in around 25% of these hot magnetic stars, radio emission is dominated by gyro-synchrotron emission instead of free-free emission. Out of these hot stars with gyro-synchrotron emission, only two stars have been discovered to be capable of emitting coherently in radio. Barnali is studying these two special stars and trying to extract information about the stellar magnetosphere from theobserved properties of coherent emission. She is also working on a project that aims at discoveringmore such stars and thus answering the question of when a hot magnetic star can emit coherently.
