Visit to The GMRT Observatory

The GMRT Observatory is open to the public on Friday, every week. Visitors will need to pre-register with us, for either of the two sessions on a given Friday. Note that we can accommodate not more than 70 people per session; hence for more than 70 people, you can request for more than one session. We recommend registering early, especially for large groups.

  • Morning: 10 AM to 12 noon (reporting time: 10 AM)
  • Afternoon: 2 PM to 4 PM (reporting time: 2 PM)

Although we do appreciate that you may be visiting Pune on a particular day of the week, we regret that we cannot entertain visitors on any day besides Friday.

An Observatory staff member will be available to show you around the campus, explain the science and engineering aspects of the GMRT, and answer your questions.

If you wish to visit GMRT Observatory:

  1. Check the available sessions for the visit at here.
  2. Download the registration form in PDF format or in doc format , fill it up, and e-mail it to gmrtvisit@ncra.tifr.res.in to reserve a session for your visit.
  3. The current list of sessions will be updated with session allotted to you here. For confirmation of your visit slot booking, you may check at this same link, in a day or two.
  4. On the day of your visit, reach GMRT Observatory sharply at the given time. Late reporting will not be allowed to enter the Observatory.

Important: You will have to switch OFF your mobile phones during your visit since they will interfere with the astronomical observations of the telescope!

In addition, the GMRT Observatory is open to the public throughout the day on the National Science Day and the following day (i.e. February 28 and 29, or February 28 and March 1), every year (Visitors registration is not required).

The GMRT Observatory is about 90 km to the north of Pune, off the Pune-Nasik highway, and 12 km from the Narayangaon State Transport Bus Depot. You can download a roadmap to get to GMRT, or find us on googlemaps too.
