List of Textbooks for the Galaxies course
- Sparke and Gallagher: Galaxies in the Universe
(Cambridge: 2007) A clear and concise introductory text on galaxies.
Covers most aspects of this course.
- Binney and Merrifield: Galactic Astronomy
(Princeton:1998) This is the definitive treatment of the
phenomenology of galaxies. We will include material from this
book. However, several aspects have been rendered outdated by
recent research.
- Binney and Tremaine: Galactic
Dynamics (Princeton:2008) . Excellent companion volume to
Binney and Merrifield. Since this course will not cover
dynamics in detail, we will use this sparingly.
- Schneider:
Extragalactic Astronomy and Cosmology: An Introduction
(Springer:2010) Excellent new textbook that covers many of
the topics we are interested in in this course. If you have time to read
only one textbook for this course, let it be this one.
- Peebles:
Principles of Physical Cosmology: A classic text. For
our purposes, it forms an excellent introduction to basic
concepts in galaxy formation.
- Mo, van den Bosch and White:
Galaxy formation and Evolution: An excellent modern text
presenting our current understanding of this subject from the theoretical
perspective.
- Cimatti, Fraternali and Nipoti:
Introduction to galaxy formation and evolution (Cambridge:2019):
An excellent modern text, this time from the observational perspective.
- NED Level 5
contains an excellent set of study materials on galaxies and cosmology.
