Recommended reading for the Galaxies course

Galaxies in the Universe
Cambridge, 2007

Sparke and Gallagher

A clear and concise introductory text on galaxies. Covers most aspects of this course. Recommended
Galactic Astronomy
Princeton, 1998

Binney and Merrifield

This is the definitive treatment of the phenomenology of galaxies. We will include material from this book. However, several aspects have been rendered outdated by recent research.
Galactic Dynamics
Princeton, 2008

Binney and Tremaine

Excellent companion volume to Binney and Merrifield. Since this course will not cover dynamics in detail, we will use this sparingly.
Extragalactic Astronomy and Cosmology: An Introduction
Springer, 2010

Schneider

Excellent new textbook that covers many of the topics we are interested in in this course. If you have time to read only one textbook for this course, let it be this one. Primary Text
Principles of Physical Cosmology
Classic

Peebles

A classic text. For our purposes, it forms an excellent introduction to basic concepts in galaxy formation.
Galaxy Formation and Evolution
Modern

Mo, van den Bosch and White

An excellent modern text presenting our current understanding of this subject.
