List of Textbooks for Extragalactic Astronomy II course
Textbooks
- Peterson, B. (1997) An Introduction to Active Galactic
Nuclei a gentle introduction to AGN at a level appropriate for our
short course.
- Beckmann, V. and Shrader, C. (2012) Active Galactic Nuclei
A X-ray astronomy centric view of AGN.
- Kembhavi, A. and Narlikar, J (1999) Quasars and Active Galactic
Nuclei: An Introduction A useful text for its clear exposition and
its good coverage of radio AGN.
- Krolik, J. (1999) Active Galactic Nuclei: From the Central Black
Hole to the Galactic Environment A comprhensive and advanced
treatment of most aspects of AGN physics.
- Blandford, R., Netzer H., and Woltjer L. (1990) Active Galactic
Nuclei Proceedings of a Saas-Fe lecture course by three of the
pioneers of AGN Physics. Dated in some aspects, but still useful for its
treatment of the physical aspects.
- D'onofrio, Marziano and Sulentic (2012) Fifty years of
quasars A comprehensive conference proceedings with excellent
articles on quasar research.
- In addition to the specialised texts on AGN listed above, relevant
chapters of introductory astronomy textbooks by Zeilek and Gregory,
Schneider and others are also very useful to get a broad brush overview of
the subject.
Review articles
A fast moving field like AGNs benefits immensely from review articles
summarising the various subfields. I list here some of the more recent
review articles, which you may find useful.
