Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  1. Which is the best place in India for tiger viewing?
Which tiger reserve you should visit depends on the season. But overall the three best places to see the tiger are:
    1. Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh state
    2. Kanha Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh state
    3. Corbett Tiger Reserve, Uttaranchal state
However please keep in mind that tiger sighting is a matter of chance. To avoid disappoinment you may wish to develop an interest in other animals and plants.
  2. I want pictures of/information on XYZ animal for my school biology class. Can you send these asap?
Generally no. I do not have any pictures/information in electronic form that is not already up on the site. For pictures see www.corbis.com and for information read up the Enclyclopaedia Britannica at www.britannica.com
  3. I am a biology major and would like to do a conservation related project in India for a few months. Any suggestions?
There are generally many restrictions on wildlife research in Indić's protected areas (some of them justified), even for Indian citizens. For foreigners, restrictions are even tighter. Even so, several students have done productive short term projects in India. Some tips to keep in mind: Indian bureaucracy moves slowly, so start your planning many months in advance. Plan to stay for at least a few months. Make sure that you arrive in a India a few weeks before you start work. Most foreigners face a bout of illness the first time they get here. Do not try to do too ambitious a project. Post to the nathistory-india mailing list for information.
  4. I want to do something to save our fast disappearing wildlife. What can I do?
Although this is one of the most frequently asked questions, there is unfortunately no simple answer. Please write to me giving information about your location, education, skills and motivations and I may be able to make some suggestions. At the very least, I will offer a few words of encouragement.
  5. I want to volunteer for the snow leopard and blackbuck projects displayed on your website. Please send me details.
I am not associated with the blackbuck and snow leopard projects which are organised by Earthwatch Institute and cannot send you details. These projects are not suitable for students from India, as they require participants to pay for themselves in foreign currency.
