Abstract. The current phenomenology of active galaxies is briefly outlined. Their significance in the larger context of galaxy formation and evolution is de- scribed. Recent ultraviolet imaging results are then summarized in the context of exploring the potential of TAUVEX in furthering AGN investigations.
