Abstract. Recently, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State Univer- sity (NCAT) won one of the largest awards from NASA to develop curriculum and research capability in space science in partnership with NASA centres, Na- tional Institute of Aerospace, the North Carolina Space Grant, the American Astronomical Society and a number of institutions affiliated with NASA. The plan is to develop curricula and research platforms that prepare science, technol- ogy, engineering and mathematics (STEM) students to be employed by NASA. The research programme initially focuses on the study of space and atmospheric physics, and the development of a general capability in atmospheric/space sci- ence.
