Ultra Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT)

Post-Doctoral Fellowships

The National Centre for Radio Astrophysics, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (NCRA-TIFR), at Pune, India, is seeking a Post-Doctoral Fellow to work on science with the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) on board the recently launched Indian Multi-wavelength satellite ASTROSAT. UVIT is capable of imaging a circular field of ~ 28 arc-minute diameter simultaneously in 3 channels : Far Ultra-Violet (FUV), Near Ultra-Violet (NUV) & Visible (VIS). A suite of filters is available to select still narrower passbands in each of these 3 channels. Slitless spectroscopy with low resolution (R~ 100) is also possible in the FUV & NUV channels, using gratings. A significant fraction of observation time using UVIT/ASTROSAT has been earmarked for scientists with an Indian affiliation. The selected candidate is expected to spend about 75% of her/his time working on one or more of a variety of astrophysical research areas that are planned to be pursued using UVIT observations. These include : Galactic structure, star formation in galaxies, particularly probing regions with low star formation rates such as the outskirts of disk galaxies as well as dwarf galaxies, studying the relationship between star formation rates and gas density as measured using different tracers etc. The remaining 25% of time could be spent pursuing any other science interest. Candidates with previous experience with observations and analysis at UV wavelengths as well as candidates with experience in the science areas listed above are encouraged to apply for the position.

Other research activities at NCRA-TIFR are centred on low frequency radio astronomy, with faculty members pursuing research in diverse areas of astrophysics (see http://www.ncra.tifr.res.in for details). NCRA-TIFR operates two large observational facilities, the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope and the Ooty Radio Telescope.

Applications containing a curriculum vitae, a research plan, and the names and e-mail addresses of three or more referees should be sent to the Dean, NCRA-TIFR Faculty, at the e-mail address deanncra@ncra.tifr.res.in, by April 30, 2016. Applicants should also request their referees to send in recommendation letters by the same deadline. All enquiries should also be made to this e-mail address. All applicants will automatically be considered for all available Post-Doctoral Fellowships at NCRA-TIFR.

The monthly salary of Post-Doctoral Fellows at NCRA-TIFR depend on experience after the doctoral degree. The monthly salary of candidates who join after submitting their doctoral thesis, but without receiving their doctoral degree, is INR 32,000. For candidates who have received their doctoral degrees, the monthly salary ranges from INR 36,000 to INR 40,000. Post-doctoral fellows are also entitled to a contingency grant of INR 32,000 per year. All positions are tenable for a maximum of 3 years, with continuations subject to a yearly review.

Post-doctoral Fellows at NCRA-TIFR are provided a travel grant of INR 2,00,000 over the course of the fellowship to enable them to travel for international conferences or for research collaborations. They are also entitled to on-campus housing (subject to availability), or a house rent allowance, and medical coverage under NCRA-TIFR's medical scheme.
