over_Interacting Supernovae

Post Doctoral Fellowships

The National Centre for Radio Astrophysics, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (NCRA-TIFR), at Pune, India,  is seeking a Post-Doctoral Fellow to work on the aspects of circumstellar interaction in core-collapse supernovae. The successful candidate will work with Dr. Poonam Chandra. In this project, the focus of work is to understand the circumstellar interaction in the core-collapse supernovae in their early phases via inputs from radio and X-ray observations. At early phase, various cooling processes like synchrotron cooling, inverse-Compton cooling etc.  are dominant which change the radio and X-ray emission profile from core-collapse supernovae.  A better understanding is needed, especially now that the wealth of data is available. The candidate will be involved in GMRT and VLA radio data analysis and its interpretation, in conjunction with data from the optical and X-ray wavebands.

Research activities at NCRA-TIFR are centred on low frequency radio astronomy, with faculty members pursuing research in diverse areas of astrophysics (see http://www.ncra.tifr.res.in). NCRA-TIFR operates two large observational facilities, the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope and the Ooty Radio Telescope.

Applications should contain a curriculum vitae and list of publications, a plan of research, and the names of three or more referees. The application material should be sent by e-mail to the Dean, NCRA Faculty,  at the e-mail address deanncra@ncra.tifr.res.in . All enquiries should also be made to this e-mail address. The application deadline is  October 31, 2014. However, late applications will be accepted until the position is filled. All applicants will automatically be considered for all available Post-Doctoral Fellowships at NCRA-TIFR.

The monthly salary and duration of Post-doctoral positions at NCRA-TIFR depend on experience after the doctoral degree. The monthly salary of candidates who join after submitting their doctoral thesis, but without receiving their doctoral degree, is INR 32,000.  For candidates who have received their doctoral degrees, the monthly salary ranges from INR 36,000 to INR 40,000. Post-doctoral fellows are also entitled to a contingency grant of INR 32,000 per year. All positions are tenable for a maximum of 3 years, with continuations subject to a yearly review.

Post-doctoral Fellows at NCRA-TIFR are provided a travel grant of INR 2,00,000 over the course of the fellowship to enable them to travel for international conferences or for research  collaborations. They are also entitled to on-campus housing (subject to availability), or a house rent allowance, and medical coverage under NCRA-TIFR's medical scheme.
