GMRT Archive Data Processing

Post-Doctoral Fellowships:

The GMRT Archive holds all interferometeric data obtained with the GMRT since 2002.  These data are currently served to users as raw UV data. In this project, we aim to process, with an automated pipeline, a significant fraction of the continuum data in the GMRT archive, to produce a large number of near science ready images and catalogs that will be publicly released.

For this project, the candidate is expected to have background in GMRT interferometric data analysis with AIPS and programming experience in Python. We will be using the SPAM pipeline for data processing; some experience with using SPAM is desirable.  Experience with the setting up and system administration of a Linux cluster would be an advantage.

The post-doctoral fellow selected for this position will work with Yogesh Wadadekar in collaboration with Ishwara-Chandra C.H. and Divya Oberoi.  About 75% of the candidate's time is expected to be devoted to the above project and the rest can used for candidate's own research activities. The candidate is encouraged to use the data products of the archive processing in their own research.

Research activities at NCRA-TIFR are centered on low frequency radio astronomy, with faculty members pursuing research in diverse areas of astrophysics (see http://www.ncra.tifr.res.in). NCRA-TIFR operates two large observational facilities, the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope and the Ooty Radio Telescope.

Applications containing a curriculum vitae, a research plan, and the names and e-mail addresses of three or more referees should be sent to the Dean, NCRA-TIFR, Pune, India at the e-mail address deanncra@ncra.tifr.res.in, by October 31, 2017.  Applicants should also request their referees to send in recommendation letters by the same deadline.  All enquiries should also be made to this e-mail address.  All applicants will automatically be considered for all available post-doctoral fellowships at NCRA-TIFR.

The monthly salary of post-doctoral fellows at NCRA-TIFR depend on experience after the doctoral degree.  The monthly salary of candidates who join after submitting their doctoral thesis, but without receiving their doctoral degree, is INR 32,000.  For candidates who have received their doctoral degrees, the monthly salary ranges from INR 36,000 to INR 40,000.  Post-doctoral fellows are also entitled to a contingency grant of INR 32,000 per year.  All positions are tenable for a maximum of 3 years, with continuations subject to a yearly review.

Post-doctoral fellows at NCRA-TIFR are provided a travel grant of INR 3,50,000 over the course of the fellowship to enable them to travel for international conferences or for research collaborations.  They are also entitled to on-campus housing (subject to availability), or a house rent allowance, and medical coverage under NCRA-TIFR's medical scheme.
