CEFIPRA post-doctoral fellowship: Modelling and Observing Pulsars

Post-Doctoral Fellowships

The National Centre for Radio Astrophysics, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (NCRA-TIFR), India, is seeking a post-doctoral fellow to work on observational and theoretical aspects of Pulsar emission mechanisms. The position is funded by the CEFIPRA – Indo-French Centre for the Promotion of Advanced Research (IFCPAR) project titled “Modelling and observing pulsars: from high energy to radio emission”.

Research activities at NCRA-TIFR are centred on low frequency radio astronomy, with faculty members pursuing research in diverse areas of astronomy. NCRA-TIFR operates two large observational facilities, the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope and the Ooty Radio Telescope.

The successful candidate will work in collaboration with Dipanjan Mitra of NCRA (Project Principal Investigator, India) and Jerome Petri, Universite de Strasbourg (Project Principal Investigator, France) on interpreting radio single-pulse dynamics and polarization observations in conjunction with X-ray and Gamma-ray observations and/or performing numerical simulations of pulsar magnetosphere and studying plasma instabilities and wave propagation in the magnetospheric plasma.

The candidate has to have a PhD degree in astronomy, astrophysics, or a related discipline, or must be awaiting the award of the Ph.D. degree after submitting the doctoral thesis to a university. A strong background in analyzing and interpreting X-ray/gamma-ray observations of pulsars (e.g from instruments like XMM-Newton, Chandra, NuSTAR, Astrosat, Fermi) and/or expertise in numerical and computational aspects of relativistic plasma astrophysics will be given preference.

Applications containing a curriculum vitae, summary of research experience and the names and e-mail addresses of three or more referees should be sent to the Dean, NCRA-TIFR Faculty, at the e-mail address deanncra@ncra.tifr.res.in , with a copy to the addresses dmitra@ncra.tifr.res.in and jerome.petri@astro.unistra.fr, by October 31, 2018. Applicants should also request their referees to send in recommendation letters by the same deadline. All enquiries should also be made to these e-mail addresses.

The appointment is for an initial period of one year and tenable for a maximum period of three years, subject to a yearly review. The selection will be made by about November 15, 2018. The CEFIPRA position funding will be available until June 24, 2021. Till this date, the fellowship amount will be as per the CEFIPRA guidelines. For the remaining period, in the event funding is not available from CEFIPRA, the candidate will be paid as per the NCRA post-doctoral guidelines (see below). The successful candidate will be provided house rent allowance (as applicable per CEFIRA OR NCRA guidelines, as appropriate), along with the fellowship, while medical benefits will be given as per the NCRA-TIFR medical scheme. In addition, the candidate will have the opportunity to make two visits for a period of one month each to Universite De Strasbourg, France, for the purpose of project collaboration. Some amount of funding for local travel within India is also available.

Funding structure for NCRA-TIFR Post-Doctoral Fellows.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The monthly salary of Post-Doctoral positions at NCRA-TIFR depends on their experience after the doctoral degree. The monthly salary of candidates who join after submitting their doctoral thesis, but without receiving their doctoral degree, is INR 32,000. For candidates who have received their doctoral degrees, the monthly salary ranges from INR 36,000 to INR 40,000. Post-doctoral fellows are also entitled to a contingency grant of INR 32,000 per year. All positions are tenable for a maximum of 3 years, with continuations subject to a yearly review.

Post-doctoral Fellows at NCRA-TIFR are provided a travel grant of INR 3,00,000 over the course of the fellowship to enable them to travel for international conferences or for research collaborations. They are also entitled to a house rent allowance, and medical coverage under NCRA-TIFR's medical scheme.
