Radio Physics Laboratory

Radio Physics Laboratory (RPL) is a joint initiative of National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA-TIFR) and Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA). RPL started in 2007 with a 4-m telescope and provides a platform for training College/University students in radio astronomy as well as carrying out small radio astronomy projects. The laboratory is located at two sites - one at NCRA-TIFR and one in IUCAA. RPL also conducts an annual training program at NCRA. RPL has two small radio telescopes, one with a diameter of 4-m and the other with a diameter of 3-m equipped with 21-cm horn feeds, low-noise amplifiers and radio receivers capable of carrying out continuum and spectral line radio observations. A set of simple hands on experiments have been designed at RPL using these two telescopes to expose students to the radio astronomy observations and analysis methodology and interpretation. In addition, RPL also has 4 table-top experiments. RPL has also devised a simple low-cost Affordable Small Radio Telescope (ASRT), which can be used to study solar radio emission. RPL conducts a variety of student training programs. Apart from limited tailor made programs for local students and providing a platform for radio astronomy projects for local engineering and science students, RPL also hosts a major annual all India program — Radio Astronomy Winter School for College students (RAWSC). 

   RAWSC-2023 is going to take place from 12th December 2023 to 22nd December 2023.
